Labor Issues - 1996

Women of Reform Judaism has often spoken against and passed strong resolutions on labor abuses, including child labor. Unfortunately many abuses still exist not only in various parts of the world but also in the United States and its garment-manufacturing centers, including very serious violations in the city of New York for famous companies. These companies may not have known of the conditions under which garments that carry their label were made. However, it is now evident that they, federal or state/provincial departments of labor, buyers and consumers in our own as well as in other countries must become urgently involved to overcome abuses.

Women of Reform Judaism urges its affiliates in North America and worldwide to:

  1. Become informed about the issue by following press, media and labor union reports;
  2. Hold informational meetings about labor abuses where found; and
  3. Write to companies reputed to manufacture goods under abusive conditions, and to local, state/provincial or national government agencies, expressing your concerns, and urging investigation and action.
